Tips on How to Clean Up Your Act

Step 1: Don't fill the silence with something worse than silence.

It takes 3 seconds for silence to become awkward, even so, make sure the void isn't filled with controversial news. Politics is best left in the Facebook and Twitter realm.

Step 2: Do not make direct eye contact for extended lengths of time.

If you find someone attractive, off-putting, or simply mind boggling... do not stare them down. This does not lead to relaxing or fun conversations. If this becomes a major issue, we suggest you wear sunglasses.

Step 3: Body language conveys a lot. What is yours saying?

Giving off awkward, unapproachable vibes happens. It's natural, we all do it, and sometimes we don't even know it. In a new setting, make sure to breathe every once in a while and casually check out your surroundings.

Step 4: The ability to read other people's body language.

If you notice the conversation drops or someone's eyes get shifty, think about what you might have said. Was it inappropriate? There's a time and place for certain conversations, you might want to take a rain check on that one.

Step 5: If all these tips fail, own your awkwardness. Just own it.

It's impossible to go through life pleasing everyone. When awkwardness does arise, you don't always have to squander it. Your strangeness might match the other person's and lead to gut-busting laughter.
